It's a Shore thing!

There’s only one place to be on New Year’s Eve: At Shore Thing with the midnight fireworks lighting up the beach while David Guetta lifts our spirits with huge tunes and a dazzling mega video installation, Armand Van Helden shows why he’s always at the top of the house music game and youngsters The Aston Shuffle treat us to their first ever live show, which they’ve already been working on for months, ready to unleash for us on New Year’s Eve!

I've heard that there's no other event like Shore Thing: It’s an out and out P.A.R.T.Y, a celebration of hot summer nights, Sydney and the beach, with a euphoric soundtrack to take you into 2011 with a big cheesy grin on your face! I'm soooo keen!

Details of the event:

December 31, New Years Eve

Bondi Park, Bondi Beach

8:30pm – 3am

Standard ticket: $135+$7bf

‘More Expensive’ ticket $225+$7bf

The aptly named 'More Expensive' ticket includes a dedicated express entry lane to the event, champagne on arrival, entry to the exclusive and exotic Beach Bar featuring a raised platform with direct views of the stage, a s**t load of toilets and no lengthy queues for the bar

Cloud Control - There's Nothing In The Water We Can't Fight

Thought i'd go local. The indie Australian band have initiated their next move in taking over the world, the new single There’s nothing in the water we can’t fight. Im pretty sure I had most of the lyrics in my head after the first listen. If you stripped some of the delayed guitar and country feel out of this, it could almost pass as a Shins track, but thats not a bad thing in the slightest way. This song is quite unique!

Have a listen!

Artist in the Spotlight: Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam

Cat Stevens was born Steven Demetre Georgiou on 21 July 1948 in London. His two earliest albums Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat went triple platinum in the USA and his next album Catch Bull at Four sold 500,000 copies in the first two weeks of its release.

At the height of his fame, in 1977, Cat Stevens converted to Islam and concurrently adopted the name of Yusuf Islam. In the next couple of years he auctioned away all of his guitars for charity and abandoned his music to attend to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community.

In 1969 he came close to dying of tuberculosis, and as a result he began investigating other religions, took up yoga and meditation and became a vegetarian. During this time he wrote about 40 songs, most of which would be published later.

A further experience that changed his outlook on life and music was in 1976, when he nearly drowned off the coast of California. Feeling as though all was lost he cried out "God, if you save me I will work for you!" Shortly after, a wave came and drew him to shore thus saving his life. His brother bought him a copy of the Qu'ran for his birthday after a trip for Jerusalem.

Cat Stevens was in Australia earlier this year in June 2010 for the first time in 30 years. To see him play the first song he ever released, "I love my dog" please click the link below.

Big Day Out 2011 - hail or fail?

The 2011 Big Day Out lineup has been released.
LCD Soundsystem return to Australia after what many people thought was their last gig ever at Splendour in the Grass, while dance fans will rejoice seeing PNAU, Bloody Beetroots and Crystal Castles on the lineup.
Sadly, there’s no Blink 182 on the lineup. Rumours had been circling that they were scheduled to head down under, since the band reunited.

Now for $155 you want a good line up, good weather and plenty of bruises to consider it have been a good day.
So when people said to me, ohhh i'm not that keen on the BDO line up, not sure if its worth the $155. I thought hmmm, to me, $155 is pretty dam cheap for the line up i'm about to show you, and considering you can easily spend $150+ today on a single performer at a one night concert [cough my $160 Bon Jovi ticket] then I think $155 is pretty good bang for your buck.

The other issue they had was, well its on Australia day this year.
But hey, what's more Aussie than heading out to Olympic park, for a day of awesome music, in the hot sweltering sun, with a can of beer [take your lamingtons with you if you want to get that picky].
Word of warning however, none of these will allowed to be displayed...

Sorry guys, but apparently the Aussie flag will be illegal at the event. As there are concerns it will spark racial riots...

Anyway, back to the better stuff...

Next years full Line Up consists of:
  • Tool
  • Rammstein
  • Iggy and the Stooges
  • M.I.A.
  • LCD Soundsystem
  • Andrew W. K.
  • Deftones
  • Crystal Castles
  • The Black Keys
  • Die Antwoord
  • Grinderman
  • Lupe Fiasco
  • Primal Scream
  • Bloody Beetroots
  • Plan B
  • Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros
  • Booka Shade
  • The Jim Jones Revue
  • CSS
  • Ratatat
  • John Butler Trio
  • Angus & Julia Stone
  • PNAU
  • Bliss N Eso
  • Birds of Tokyo
  • Wolfmother
  • Little Red
  • Gyroscope
  • Operator Please
  • Airbourne
  • Blue King Brown

  • Children Collide
  • The Naked & Famous

  • Gypsy and the Cat

  • Lowrider

Now my RED highlighting will be the performers that I will 100% want to see. But there are many others here on the list who's music I enjoy and will dance too quite happily.

Just click on my little link below to check out the website for more info on all the performers:

BDO organisers, are channelling the psychedelic look for 2011, and going a little bit trippy on us I feel.

And for those of you who missed out at midnight on Wednesday, don't despair.
There will a second show on for Sydney goers, on the 27th of Jan. [Also to please all those who don't want to attend on Australia Day]

Tickets go on sale Monday 11th October for the second show.

So get your act together, because for me Big Day Out will always be a HAIL OF A DAY!!!

God's Kitchen

Hey Everyone!,

So on the long weekend, Sunday the 3rd of October, i attended an event at the Hordern Pavilion called God's Kitchen. The event was based around the trance music genre with spectacular lighting effects. One of the greatest things about the event was that it was held in 3D!, thats right, everyone at the gate was given a set of 3D glasses. The lineup of DJ's included:
- Andy Moor
- John O'Callaghan
- Marcel Woods
- Wippenberg
Anyway, the whole night was amazing!, very tired at the end though, as the hours were 10pm - 6am!.
Here's a video a friend of mine took on the night   -

Loving Lily

While some of you may think she is a bit crazy.
And while some people only watched her at the 2010 Big Day Out because you thought she might do something crazy [i.e run across the stage naked]

Lily Allen is still without a doubt a musical entrepreneur of our time.
In terms of your solo female performers, she's not your sassy Katy Perry, or classic Kylie or tragic Amy Winehouse. But she does bring something fresh to the stage.

Her quirky songs usually have a great upbeat tempo, and they are easy to sing-a-long to.
She also sings about a lot of things that I think would actually be on a lot of women's minds [but would never say so]

- It's Not Fair
- 22
- F*** You

- I Don't Know

Are a few of my top played Lily's on itunes. And all of them actually have quite an interesting message or story to them.

While she's definitely not shy about dropping any number of profanities into her songs. MTV said in February 2009 "She seems less like the model of a 21st century pop star and more like the kind of girlfriend you'd have when you're 22 – the awesome kind you'd go backpacking around Europe with, wear a sarong with. She is perfectly imperfect. Which is why she's probably also the most interesting pop star ever created."

Which is possibly why she is in the top 10 of most influential celebrities of today.

Love her or hate her, she's produced some great music, and I don't think we'll see the end of Lily for quite some time, despite the fact she has a baby on the way, due next year February.

And go have a listen to Lily's cover of Britney's Womaniser. A good song made even better with that British twang:    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jOzuLsJIUE

Love from today: I heart Lily.

AQUA Flashback... [you know you love it]

I went to the liberty of re-organising my itunes yesterday, best procrastination in the world.
And I came across some good old favourites of mine.

AQUA!!

Now for those of you who weren't avid AQUA fans, then you will know at least their character song, Barbie Girl. "I'm a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world. Wrapped in plastic, its fantastic." "Come on Barbie lets go party."

Now will this is a much loved song around the world. And still sung by hundreds of little girls [and grown up ones.] Aqua, actually had a few other good ones in the album list.

Dr. Jones, was a personal favourite, and I am quite ashamed to admit it but after rediscovering this great song yesterday. I have set it as my new ringtone. Is this really embarrassing?

But AQUA, the Danish/Norwegian group, did release two full albums, and had 3 number one singles, and had two albums. Aquarius & Aquarium.

But seriously, take a look at these guys. They really had the 90's hair and fashion down pat.

While sadly the group did split in 2001. There two albums did have a lot of pop songs that keep me dancing through the late 90's and early 2000.

And even if AQUA really isn't your thing... which for probably a lot of you its know.
I suggest you go through your itunes, and find some songs that you loved in the 90's, or even 80's. Pop them on, and have a little jive around your room.

Just don't tell anyone you did it.

Over and out!

One in a Million....

For those who love R&B this song is calling you!

NeYo's One In A Million has a sort of Michael Jackson feel to it. The smooth beat with a mid-tempo joint is sure to bring the winter to a smooth close. The R&B ballad serves as the official third single from NeYo's upcoming studio album "Libra Scale" which hit stores on October 4th.

Ne-Yo never fails to give all his fans, really feel-good music. The music video speaks for itself, i love it so much, he's such a cutie! This music video is definatley worth watching! :)

Chill music - Angus & Julia Stone

Angus & Julia Stone are a brother-sister duo from Newport on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. All their songs are based on pretty similar chord progressions, instruments and structures. If you like what they are, it’s a gem. They recently performed at Enmore Theatre, Sydney where I was lucky enough to go to, they are both amazing live!

Down the Way, their second full album, is a quiet storm. Hold On (opening in a wave of shimmer) and For You, are Julia warming up her palpitations, giving us a warning nod before ripping our emotions from our chests. Angus, meanwhile, grooves away to himself like the most talented busker in the world, disinterested in reaching out, bringing an organic sun-kissed vibe to Big Jet Plane.

My Favourite tracks:
  1. Big Jet Plane
  2. Just a Boy
  3. Yellow Brick Road
  4. Hold On
  5. Mango Tree
  6. Bella

Loving Local Music- Frenzal Rhomb

These Sydney punk rockers formed in 1992 and have a rough ocker sound with refreshing lyrics that are at times painfully honest. However, these guys are the real deal and not your typical 'punk' that seems to be being created in unoriginal mass these days. These guys are animal activists, into politics and not afraid to speak their minds.

However, this trait has placed them at the centre of controversy on more than one occasion! Perhaps the most famous of these occurred in 2004 at the 'Bass in the Grass' festival in Darwin, at which Jackie O (of Kyle and Jackie O fame) was the MC. She was running 9 hours late (they had to cut 9 songs from their set in the end) and at being introduced began speaking to the crowd. So guitarist Lindsay McDougall began playing ACDC's Thunderstruck over her voice.
Jay Whalley "I would like to proceed by saying F**k Australian Idol and Popstars" (of which Kyle and Jackie O have both been heavily involved)- which he later amended to saying that original bands in Australia are being shoved 'to the side' to make way for cover artists off these programs.

Kyle Sandilands then told them that they would not be able to play on any Austereo networks again. Jay also claims in a conversation that they called their record company threatening to 'bury the band'

To hear the heated discussion played on radio following the event between Kyle and Jackie O and Jay from Frenzal Rhomb click this link :
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EJkJi_yHHE&feature=related

On a different note, their music is reflective of youth Australian culture, which is relevant and fun.  They have supported huge American bands such as Blink 182 and The Offspring on their respective Australian tours. Their lyrics can be offensive but they definitely put a creative spin on taking the piss out of those who they feel deserve it.

One example is their track "Russel Crowe's Band":

'Don't get a million bucks for getting out of bed
Don't get a million fucks when I punch folks in the head
But even if we know we never get a billboard top 10 hit
At least we know Russell Crowe's bands' a fuckin pile of shit'

There are plenty more examples to get into, but other tracks worth listening to of theirs include Dr Lindeman's Adventure Family Theme Park World, Run, War, Mum Changed The Locks, Punch in the Face and You Can't Move Into My House.

Check out the Link Below to see Frenzal Rhomb rocking out Punch in the Face at Sydney's Big Day Out in 2001!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_BJE6U3mVk&feature=related

They are playing at the "No Sleep Till" Festival alongside bands such as Atreyu, NOFX and A Day To Remember. This festival hits Sydney on Saturday 18 December this year. For more info :

Ipod Shuffle- Reel Big Fish 'Take On Me'

It is impossible to remain in a bad mood when you listen to this track! Reel Big Fish are a ska band who released this cover of AHA's classic hit in 1999, which featured in the hit comedy film 'Baseketball'.

Reel Big Fish have an overall feelgood sound, and while they aren't a band you typically hear on the radio, they have quite a large following internationally. Famous for songs including  "Sell Out" "Beer" "She Has A Girlfriend Now" and "F**k Off", as well as their catchy beats and funky riffs their lyrics are always a source of amusement, making their music entertaining and fun.

As well as Take On Me, they have also produced fun, upbeat covers such as The Eagle's Hotel California and Come On Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners, amongst others.

From dancing, to a Summer backyard barbecue, to party prepping to a pub atmosphere, Reel Big Fish have proven to be a successful band that has transcended time and age barriers to appeal to a multitude of fans.

Loving Local Music- The Scare

Today we have a review of a different type as this band unfortunately split earlier this year. The Scare were a Sydney based rock band that have produced a variety of sounds over time. Their latest album, Oozevoodoo (released in 2009) is original and edgy, as well as cheeky and fun.
As a live set, the crowd can never know what to expect. Renowned for embracing the sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle, no two sets are the same.

I think I will always remember the first time I heard this band. At Big Day Out 2010, upon my boyfriend's recommendation, my best friend, he and I went the polar opposite direction to most other festival goers, opting to miss Calvin Harris for this alternative band. Although I had been warned that they were "very different", I didn't expect him to run into the crowd whilst singing (straight at me at one stage), and lasso fans with his mike during the performance. Whilst attending a gig of theirs in Oxford Street and discussing the band with a fellow fan (who I had just met), I was a bit taken back when she declared , "I hope we get to see Kiss'  (lead singer) penis again!'' Although this wasn't the case once again their performance didn't disappoint.

Tracks to watch out for on this album include Could Be Bad, No Money, Desperate and She Can't Say No (I won't let her).  While Kiss' voice has been described by some as 'an acquired taste' I guarantee the catchy tunes and their original sound will hook you in on your first listen.

These can all be heard on their MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/thescare

Also, keep an eye out for their guitarist Liam O'Brien in up and coming local band Myth and Tropics.
